Axxess Business Centers Launches NY Small Business Indicators Index
53% of Companies Say Business is Better Than Last Month,
But 85% Say the Government is Not Providing the Help They Need
NEW YORK, June 2 - Axxess Business Centers, Inc., the leader in affordable consulting,
business plan writing and financing for startups and small businesses, has launched the
New York Small Business Indicators Index, a market basket of 10 leading indicators that
reflect the current state of small business in the New York metro area, CEO and President
Rosalind Resnick announced today.
"Our goal is to raise awareness of the challenges and issues facing small business owners
in New York City and to press for policies and changes that will help local businesses get
the help they need and the recognition they deserve," Resnick said. "We plan to gather
data from our clients and newsletter subscribers on a monthly basis and share it with the
media, business groups and government officials."
The New York Small Business Indicators Index will measure business owners' confidence in
the economy and in their own companies and track trends in pricing, hiring, financing,
marketing, and technology investment. The Index will also gauge business owners'
satisfaction with the level of assistance that they are receiving from government agencies.
To date, Axxess Business Centers has gathered close to 2,000 small business owners on its
survey panel.
Here are the results of Axxess Business Centers' survey conducted last month:
More than 54 percent of companies surveyed said that they had less confidence in
the economy than they did a month ago.
Close to 53 percent said they felt that the outlook for their business was better than
it was the month before.
Eighty-three (83) percent said they were not planning to hire any new employees.
Close to 70 percent said they were not planning to seek additional bank financing or
venture capital.
More than two-thirds (68 percent) said they were not planning to purchase new equipment
or technology.
Only 32 percent said they were planning to launch any new marketing or public relations
campaigns.
Seventeen (17) percent said they were going to raise their prices; 32 percent said
they planned to lower them, and 51 percent said they planned to hold prices steady.
More than 70 percent said they were holding receivables longer than they were a month ago.
Close to 45 percent said they were bringing more work in house instead of outsourcing it.
Only 10 percent said they felt that the government is giving their businesses the
help they need.
"The New York City small business community has shifted into survival mode," Resnick said.
"It's clear that small companies are having to do more with less in order to survive in New
York's recessionary economy."
